MORNING TRIPS

Morris Arboretum (WALKING)
Time: 8:00 – 10:30 am
Cost: $30/person (the entrance fee for Morris Arboretum is waived for this field trip)
Meeting Location: 19 W Northwestern Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19118. Just past the entrance kiosk you will see a cleared (but NOT paved) parking area to the left. Meet your guides in this parking lot. GPS coordinates for the lot: 40.090876, -75.223456

Morris Arboretum’s natural areas include wetlands, meadows, and the woodlands along the Wissahickon Creek. These areas provide a great habitat for a wide variety of wildlife and birds year-round. There are resident birds, as well as migrating raptors and warblers to see. Additionally, Out on a Limb gives you a chance to look for birds on the tree canopy: a great vantage point for viewing birds at treetop level. 110 species have been recorded here during the month of October and 180 species have been recorded overall.


FDR Park (WALKING)
Time: 8:00 – 10:30 am
Cost: $30/person
Meeting Location: 1500 Pattison Avenue &, S Broad St, Philadelphia, PA 19145. There are two entrances to FDR park along Pattison Ave. The westernmost entrance leads directly to the parking lot in front of the golf course entrance. Meet your trip leader at the parking lot in front of the entrance to the park’s golf course. GPS coordinates: 39.904739, -75.182935

FDR Park is South Philadelphia’s largest park and one of its most important public institutions, reflecting the remarkable racial, cultural, and economic diversity of South Philadelphia. Its lakes, architecture, athletic fields, and nature trails create a civic commons where Philadelphians of all backgrounds can recreate, experience nature, and enjoy the cultural expressions of South Philadelphia. Restrooms unavailable at this site. 158 species have been recorded here during the month of October and 226 species have been recorded overall. 


Strawberry Mansion (WALKING)
Time: 8:00 – 10:30 am
Cost: $30/person
Meeting Location: The Discovery Center at 3401 Reservoir Dr, Philadelphia, PA 19121. Park in the visitor lot, opposite the disc golf course and meet our trip leaders at the Discovery Center parking lot. GPS coordinates: 39.981706, -75.191262

This special birding tour will take us through Fairmount Park and the historic neighborhood of Strawberry Mansion. Join us as we hear from local residents about the importance of the Strawberry Mansion community to the city of Philadelphia and see first-hand how the largest park system within a city in the US, and a designated Important Bird Area, supports bird life and bird migration. 92 species have been recorded here during the month of October and 148 species have been recorded here overall.

This hike will have detailed conversations about environmental justice and environmental racism. 


Pennypack on the Delaware (WALKING)
Time: 8:00 – 10:30 am
Cost: $30/person
Meeting Location: From 7801 State Road, Philadelphia, PA 19136, take Pennypack Path east towards the Delaware River. Immediately after the road bends to the north (left) park in the first parking area along the east (right) side of the road. Meet our field trip leaders at the entrance to the Pennypack Trail. If nearby parking is full, please park in the next lot down the road and walk back to the meeting location. GPS coordinates: 40.02591, -75.01649

Pennypack on the Delaware is a picturesque 65-acre park along the Delaware river in the Holmesburg section of Northeast Philadelphia. It’s located where the Pennypack Creek meets the Delaware, and is part of the Northern Delaware Riverfront Greenway. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy paved and natural trails that wind through grassy recreational areas, and meadows that lead up to an area of woods and wetlands at the point where the creek and river converge. POD as its’ known in the birding community is also one of Philadelphia’s best birding locations where more species (including a number of outstanding rarities) have been recorded than at any other location in the city except for John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge. 267 species have been recorded at POD overall and 198 species have been recorded just in October.
